Three Reasons You Need to Prioritize Heart-Centered Teaching This Year
As a teacher you endure so much. The needs of our students have grown drastically and the workload of teachers has also increased.
Any way that I can help you feel more in control and like you have the full capability to take on what your job is throwing at you, that is what I want to do. This is where the heart-centered approach comes into play.
In order to accomplish all of the responsibilities in our daily work day, and still leave the classroom feeling fulfilled and ready to return the following day- we must prioritize having a heart-centered classroom.
My goal is for you to feel passionate about your job. For you to know that you are doing an amazing job, and give you the confidence to keep going and improving. I am in this with you and I am so proud of how far you have come to get here.
What is a heart-centered classroom?
A heart-centered classroom is a classroom that prioritizes meeting the emotional needs of the teacher and the students.
In this classroom setting, there are systems for both classroom and behavior management and both of these structures are rooted in social-emotional development.
Both the teacher and students thrive in this learning space because they feel a strong sense of togetherness and community. There are routines that allow everyone to feel safe, seen, and heard.
Your Mental Health
The number one reason for you to consider having a heart-centered classroom is because in this learning environment you will no longer put your own mental-health aside at the expense of your responsibilities in the classroom.
I want you to enjoy going to work everyday. To feel like you are making an impact on your students further than just academically. This is what is going to help your mental health.
Inside a heart-centered classroom, you can show up as you are and take the time you need. You are able to meet your students where they are and encourage them to build upon whatever skills they need support in.
When you have a heart-centered classroom, students will be able to confidently handle conflict while you step into the role of facilitator, leaving you more time to focus on doing what you love to do: teach!
Lifelong Foundation in Connected Relationships
The second reason to consider having a heart-centered classroom is the social-emotional growth it offers students.
How great would it feel to give your students the lifelong foundations to have intentional and connected relationships? Your students will feel safe to explore words like empathy, gratitude, and integrity.
Furthermore, they’ll be more engaged in classroom activities because of this heart-centered approach. This means happier students and a happier teacher!
Giving You More Space
The third reason to consider having a heart-centered classroom is the amount of time it will free up in all other areas of your daily classroom life.
How much time during the day is spent on managing behaviors and putting out fires? This is precious time taken away from the teaching we have to get done and the curriculum we have to get through.
When you take the time to build these systems in your classroom and behavior management, and foster a heart-centered classroom, you will find you'll have so much more time to teach!
This is because you will be meeting the emotional needs of students throughout the school day, which will ultimately lead to a decrease in behaviors and time spent managing them.
Your Heart-Centered Classroom
There you have it! The 3 reasons you need to prioritize a heart-centered teaching philosophy.
Overall, this is going to help both you and your students' classroom experience, improve your mental health, give your students skills that will last a lifetime, and give you more space to actually teach and do what you love.
I am so proud of you and excited for you to take on this new journey of a heart-centered classroom!
